Over the weekend Pat and I represented San Francisco in the National CityChase race which is like the Amazing Race. It started at 9 am on Friday morning and ended Sat. evening. It technically went about 36 hours with Pat and I calling it quits at around the 34 hour point during the last challenge in which we were supposed to do a photo/video scavenger hunt doing such things as taking a pic of us taking a bubble bath in someone's house, a video of one of us using heavy machinery, a pic of us on somebody's 3rd story balcony... Well, we got the challenge at the same time as 2 other teams but after talking about it over a period of 2 hours, we decided we had done enough and really didn't want to talk to strangers... Earlier that day had taken a lot out of him and I and our motivation was just not there for this last challenge. The reward for winning this race was that the team would go on to the International race in Morocco but Pat and I knew that we wouldn't be able to. Just to give you an idea of what we did, the first real test was a marine boot camp that physically destroyed us, then we did a 6 mile bike ride to a port where we took a boat 20 minutes out and had to catch 20 lbs of fish between two teams. We then cleared a plot of land of trees and weeds that took a couple hours which was in the 9th ward. It was in coordination with the Make It Right foundation and was really hot and tiring. I was stung by a bee or wasp (which I'm allergic to) but it didn't really start bothering me until last night. From the 9th ward, we ran about 5 miles back to downtown New Orleans and had to paint our bodies and then go stand on "stages" while raising $50 from people walking by. This was one of the most uncomfortable things I've ever done as I was totally painted and only wearing a pair of briefs that had "hustler" written on it. After raising $50, one of us had to get a body part pierced which ended with Pat having his belly button pierced. Afterwards, we ate and then headed out to get a Vampire tour of downtown. We thought we would be tested on the information but it turned out after the tour we had to take a citizenship test which would prove crucial during the next day. During the middle of the night, we played golf with glow in the dark balls and this was a tough event for Pat and I as he had never played golf. We were allowed an hour and a half nap in which I got no sleep since I thought we would be woken up soon after laying down and also the mosquitoes were driving me nuts. We then drove 30 minutes to go skydiving and that experience really took its toll on Pat as he was throwing up a lot and very green. I also managed to throw up. Luckily he was able to get better just in time for us to make gumbo. Right before making gumbo, one team was eliminated due to them having the lowest score on the citizen test. Pat and I were tied for 4th after the gumbo which set us 2o min. behind the rest of the teams but the ferry we had to catch luckily didn't leave and we all were together by the time it did. We made a small float, carried an alligator and then received the last challenge of taking photos/videos and at that point we decided we just weren't willing to do it. We felt good about the experience and met some great people. It was a really cool thing to do with Pat right before he heads off to the Army and it tested us in many ways. championship day 1 from
